HLC summer camp

On August 2012 Aspida team was invited in one of the most successful Summer camps in Cyprus. The Healthy Lifestyle camp is a summer camp for kids and teens between the ages of 10 to 15, where they are introduced to new sports, games and activities and spend a week at Agros eating healthily and being active. This is an introductory camp to other sports besides football and basketball.
More than 80 kids attended the camp divided into 4 age groups, all of which experienced all the sports including Brazilian jiu jitsu with me and fellow Aspida member Andreas Prezas.  On the first day I had the opportunity to give a lecture about the sport showing the kids videos and explaining the basic principles and history of BJJ. All the kids were enthusiastic and enjoyed it, and like a sponge quickly took to the sport and started asking questions and were eager to try more techniques. I enjoyed the experience and I hope to repeat this in the future.

1st Cyprus open BJJ competition

The Winners of  Cyprus Open BJJ Competition with Pantelis and Andreas

On July 14, Aspida Team hosted the first Cyprus Open BJJ Competition. The competition was a big success with the exception of the cancellation of one of the local BJJ academy canceling it's participation the day before the event. I find it really sad that even member of the school may have wanted to participate, and for reasons that I can't understand, not one came to the event to show their support or to participate in the first event for a sport which is quickly growing in Cyprus. The important thing is not winning or losing, but participating. A good athlete is not one who never fights (and so has never lost), but one who leave his ego off the matt and fights because he enjoys rolling with others.
We had a great turnout, with many individual players than came from abroad, and other academies in cyprus. We even had spectators who came just watch the even and support the athletes. The atmosphere was exciting and positive, everyone enjoyed themselves. We had over 100 people attend and participate at the event. A very big thank you to everyone who made this first event possible, and to Aspida Team Paphos for their support, and to B-Fit for sponsoring the winner's prizes, and all who supported the athletes.

Final results :

-70kg 1st Nikolas Mavromatis (Aspidateam Cy)

Two MMA wins for Aspida

On Friday 27th April, Andreas Achniotis participated in Uppercut 47 Kickboxing event in Nicosia, where Andreas fought an MMA fight with Greek fighter Panayiotis Papageorgiou. The fight immediately went to the ground after a couple of standup combinations. Andreas passed the guard and took mount position, where he applied the winning reverse triangle in the first round. You can see the fight on Aspida's FB page here.

On Saturday 28th, Larnaka's Trojan Gym held an MMA event. Larnaka-based Aspida Team member, Gregoris Demitriou, who also trains his striking at Trojan Gym, participated. Greg fought with a striker, and Greg's advantage as a grappler was obvious throughout the fight. Greg won with an armbar submission in the third round. Check the video below for his fight!

We are very proud of both the boys who proved hard work and dedication pays off! Well done Andreas and Gregori.

Rodolfo Vieira became an overnight sensation in the world of Jiu Jitsu in 2009 after winning the World Pro Cup Brazilian Trials in combined division of brown & black belt, conquering the 1st spot as a brown belt against high level black belts with tons of experience in top tournaments. He repeated the deed in January 2011, this time as an established black belt winning his weight and the open weight division in the Brazilian trials of the World Pro Cup and also winning the finals in Abu Dhabi. Pan Hellenic Jiu Jitsu 2012

On the 4th March, members of Aspida Team went to Athens to participate in the Pan Hellenic Jiu Jitsu 2012 competition. The final results being we have two Gold medals, one Silver and one Bronze.

Gregory Demetriou won all three of his matches and came first in his category, White U76kg.
Greg, having a strong wrestling background, dominated the game from the beginning with good take downs and strong positioning. The final was a tough fight, with Greg's opponent being equally strong and skilled.

Giorgos Zapounis won the silver in White U88kg, playing very strategically and following instructions well. At only 18yrs old, Giorgos has only being doing BJJ for a year, with no previous experience in other sports. He shows great potential, competing against some very strong competitors with more experience, but with technique and clever strategy, won his games.

Andreas Achniotis came third in the Open category, Purple and Brown belts. Both of his fights were with competitors heavier and bigger than himself, yet Andreas showed great skill and strength. His first game, with a competitor 90kg, he won with an armbar submission. His second game was with a competitor 120kg. In the first 4 minutes, Andreas attempted to take down his opponent, with both athletes failing to take down, Andreas's competitor called the guard, Andreas managed to pass on half guard. He struggled to pass his big opponent using his other leg hook, and attempted a collar choke. The opponent used his advantageous body weight to flip Andreas from half guard taking 2 points and continued to play a defensive game staying in Andreas's guard, by holding Andrea's hand behind his back. At 30sec before the end, Andreas released his hand and started attacking by opening his guard, but time ran out. The end result being a 2-0 score.

Although Andreas Prezas lost his first fight, he did not play as well as he is capable of playing, playing a more defensive game as opposed to attacking, losing with points. His category had many good Greek competitors, making it a tough one to compete in.

Panos Petralis is a member of Aspida, now studying in Thessaloniki and training with Nuova Uniao, also joined his old team mates in Athens, winning first place in White belts Over 100kg. Well done again to everyone who competed and represented Aspida Team in Athens.

You can view videos of the fight on our Youtube channel at this link.

Aspida's Indoor competition

Aspida Team had it's second indoor competition on the 16th February, which was a big success with 30 competitors divided into 3 categories. The categories were (1) White /Blue belts Under 76kg, (2) Blue belts Over76kg and (3) Blue/Purple/Brown belts Open.

The brackets were decided based on competitor weight and skill, to keep the games fair. In the first category, White/Blue U76kg the final game was won by Gregory Demetriou vs. Nikolas Mavromati (won by submission).

Second category winner Bl O76kg, was won by Zacharias Aristidou vs. Christos Phantis (won by submission).

Third category winner Bl/P/Br Open, was won by Dino Kouyialis vs. Dimitris Louka (points).
It was a tight fight, which Kouyialis won 8 to Louka's 7 points.

Overall, the event was a success and brought a sense of sportsmanship to the whole team. In the beginners White belts, there was another fight against Phanos Mappouras vs. his cousin Phanis Tinizis, which Mappouras won showing immense skill and technique 12-2. Both players played extremely well, having only started two months prior. Phanos Mappouras attempted many submissions, one after the other.

Congratulations to all the competitors and a big thank you to all who attended, making this day possible.
